Suite Modale brings together pianist Carlo Corazza and flautist Irene Pace in an intimate interpretation of Ernest Bloch's 1956 composition, originally written for flute and strings.
One of Bloch's final works, Suite Modale reflects the composer's mature musical language, combining modal melodies, polyphonic writing and deeply expressive musical ideas.
Across four contrasting movements, the flute and piano explore moments of melancholy, reflection, dance and renewed vitality. From the contemplative opening Moderato to the contrasting passages of the concluding Adagio – Allegro deciso, the suite traces an expressive journey towards a sense of peace and acceptance.
Dedicated by Bloch to flautist Elaine Schaffer, Suite Modale offers a remarkable example of the composer's late style, presented here through the dialogue between two instruments.
Performed by Carlo Corazza (piano) and Irene Pace (flute).
Released by Raighes Factory on 4 December 2020.
