For A Time I Rest settles into the warmer side of Russ McRee’s The Peace of Wild Things. Guitar, bass, drums and synthesiser move with the relaxed, rolling feel Russ associates with some of his favourite music from the 1970s. Eagles, America, Tom Petty and the Laurel Canyon scene all sit among the references behind the piece, bringing a familiar warmth to its instrumental character. Russ imagined it as music for mellowing out while already in a good mood. The guitar carries the melody without urgency, while the rhythm keeps everything moving with an easy, comfortable flow. The title comes from Wendell Berry’s The Peace of Wild Things, where rest appears as a temporary release found within the natural world. Here, McRee gives that moment a warm and quietly joyful musical setting.
