Free closes the musical sequence of The Peace of Wild Things. Russ McRee wrote the piece around freedom and the desire to embrace it, share it and support those who live without it. Guitar, bass, drums and synthesiser carry the final chapter forward, maintaining the melodic character of the project while giving its ending a sense of release. The title comes from the closing thought in Wendell Berry’s poem, completing the thread that has connected all eight compositions. McRee also describes the piece as walking away from whatever seeks to hold it down. After grief, still water, stars, distance, rest and grace, Free brings the suite to its conclusion.
