Rose & Hummingbird comes directly from James Filkins' surroundings. Inspired by his wife's garden, its roses, native plants, hummingbirds and butterflies, the piece places baritone guitar alongside the flute of Luis Vilca. The contrast between the guitar's lower register and the flute's light, mobile line gives the arrangement much of its character. Nature appears here through specific observations close to home, translated into two instrumental voices with very different ranges and textures.
