Witch Hazel takes its name from the trees that grow around James Filkins' home. Their habit of blooming according to their own unpredictable timing appealed to a composer whose music often develops in much the same way, without following a fixed schedule. Filkins performs the piece on a custom 12-fret guitar, making the character of the instrument part of the composition. The result connects one of the album's recurring natural images with his longstanding interest in guitar construction, resonance and the possibilities opened by different instruments.
