Joie De Vivre is built around the contrast and compatibility of two guitar voices. James Filkins and Tommy Berre bring steel-string and nylon-string colours into the same arrangement, allowing differences in attack, warmth and resonance to become part of the musical conversation. Rather than blending the instruments into a single texture, the piece benefits from their individual personalities. It is another example of Filkins' interest in dialogue, this time expressed entirely through guitars with distinct construction, touch and tonal character.
