Release Info:

When spring slowly returns to Northern Michigan, the change is first heard before it is fully seen. After months of winter stillness, the air begins to fill again with small voices. Robins, chickadees, mourning doves, and red-winged blackbirds announce the shift of season. Among them, the clear and vibrant call of the northern cardinal often rises above the rest, bright and unmistakable.

With Cardinal Serenade, James Filkins translates this moment of seasonal awakening into music. The piece unfolds as a gentle conversation between acoustic guitar and harp, an intimate duet that reflects the quiet beauty of early spring mornings.

Filkins has often drawn inspiration from the landscapes surrounding Traverse City and the forests and lakes of Northern Michigan. These environments shape not only the imagery of his music but also its pacing. Like the gradual warming of the earth after a long winter, the composition opens slowly, allowing each phrase to breathe.

Rooted in the language of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, a tradition that has been cultivated by musicians such as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges, the guitar provides a warm and steady melodic foundation. Alongside it, Alice Roberts’ harp adds a luminous texture. Her playing glimmers lightly across the arrangement, echoing the sensation of sunlight touching branches after months of cold.

The result is music that moves with patience and quiet grace. Guitar and harp do not compete for space. Instead they weave together in a delicate balance, mirroring the natural harmony of birds, wind, and awakening trees.

Cardinal Serenade becomes a small portrait of renewal. A reminder that after the stillness of winter, life returns gently, first through sound, then through light.

Recorded at The Loon Bin Studio in Traverse City, Michigan, mixed by Corin Nelsen in Oxford, Michigan, and completed with mastering in Sardinia at Raighes Factory, the track continues Filkins’ exploration of landscape, memory, and atmosphere through the expressive voice of acoustic instruments.
