Release Info:

Some melodies seem to arrive already complete, as if they had simply been waiting quietly for the right moment to appear. “Leelanau Lullaby” began this way for James Filkins after restringing an old guitar in a Nashville high strung tuning, searching not for a composition but for a different perspective on the instrument. Within minutes, the framework of the piece had taken shape.

What gives the recording its emotional depth, however, is the sense of time contained within it. Early viola performances recorded years ago by Christina Karakos, then a young student and aspiring musician, were revisited and gradually surrounded by new arrangements featuring violinist Sav Madigan and cellist Katie Larson of The Accidentals. The result feels less like a constructed studio piece and more like a conversation unfolding across different seasons of life.

The composition carries echoes of Neo Classical Piano and chamber folk traditions, though it remains deeply rooted in acoustic guitar writing. The layered strings expand the melody naturally, moving from fragile and intimate passages into moments of warmth and openness that resemble the slow emergence of morning light over Northern Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula.

Filkins approaches instrumental composition in a way that values atmosphere and emotional continuity over virtuosity. The guitar introduces the theme with restraint, leaving space for the viola, violin, and cello to gradually bloom around it. The arrangement never overwhelms the melody. Instead, each instrument seems to listen and respond to the others with patience and care.

Like many places along the shores of Lake Michigan, Leelanau carries a quiet sense of memory and distance. “Leelanau Lullaby” reflects that landscape with remarkable tenderness, offering a piece that feels suspended somewhere between nostalgia and renewal.

“Leelanau Lullaby” carries the feeling of a memory rediscovered after many years. What began as a spontaneous guitar composition slowly evolved into a layered conversation between instruments and generations of musicians. The piece opens quietly, almost hesitantly, before the strings begin to widen the emotional landscape around the melody.

The unusual high strung guitar tuning gives the recording a delicate brightness, reminiscent of early morning light reflecting across the waters of Northern Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula. Viola, violin, and cello gradually intertwine, transforming the composition into something deeply cinematic yet intimate.

Rather than building toward drama, the arrangement unfolds patiently, allowing each instrument to breathe within the space of the recording. The result feels grounded in both chamber folk traditions and modern acoustic instrumental music, shaped by friendship, place, and the passing of time.
